Former Bakersfield Police chief Robert Powers pops up in an episode of “The Bob Edwards Show,” in which the Sirius/XM radio host examines Powers’ 1950s essay “I Quit Carrying a Gun.”
The segment includes Powers’ original appearance on Edward R. Murrow’s old show “This I Believe,” in which “people from all walks of life describe their personal philosophies in a brief essay.” (You can listen to the segment by using the audio player above the photo to the left).
“This I Believe” has spun off into its own website, and in summarizing Powers’ essay, the site says, “Former Bakersfield, Calif., police chief Robert Powers struggled to make sense of what he saw in his years in law enforcement. He found comfort in the words of religious and mystic texts from around the world, and in his belief that God loves mankind.
