CARSON -- Melissa Sweat scored 21 points and Jalei Kinder added 16 points as Stockdale defeated Carson, 78-72, in the opening round of the CIF Southern Regional Division I girls basketball playoffs Tuesday.
The Lady Mustangs advance to the second round on Thursday and will play Long Beach Poly, which defeated LA Washington Tuesday.
Sweat was aggressive at both ends of the floor. She scored eight points in the third quarter that propelled Stockdale to a, 61-52, lead after three periods.
"We took our anger out on them," said Sweat, referring to Stockdale's loss to Clovis West in the Central Section final Saturday. "We came into their house and our defense put extra pressure on the them."
The Colts cut the Mustangs' lead to 69-64 on two Janitha Lamaleava two free throws with 2:12 left.
Kinder then hit two big baskets down the stretch as Stockdale upped its lead to 71-64 with 1:41 left.
