SAN JOSE -- San Jose State improved to 17-5 Friday by taking an early lead and cruising to an 8-4 baseball win over Cal State Bakersfield, the Roadrunners' eighth straight loss and 12th defeat in 13 games.
CSUB (4-15) trailed 5-1 after three innings but pulled within 5-4 in the sixth on freshman Martin Medina's team-leading fifth home run, a two-run shot.
But the Roadrunners were blanked the rest of the way. David Bermer (5-0) tossed his second complete game of the season for the Spartans, striking out 12 while allowing five hits and two walks.
CSUB starting pitcher Mickey Jannis fell to 0-4. He allowed 10 hits and seven runs (four earned) in seven innings with four walks and six strikeouts.
The teams continue their three-game series with 1 p.m. games today and Sunday.

Merced (23-6, 13-1 Central Valley Conference) had a complete-game win by left-hander Todd Logan, who scattered 11 hits, walked none and struck out seven.
